The Matter with Matter

Lindsey Drucker: You’re seeing how many categories now?

Danae Bix: Five. We have your basic humanoid forms, and by that I mean they look like people, only they’re exaggerated by some measure: too tall, too long-armed, so on.

LD: The soldier.

DB: Or the “angry stepfather” character. Then there are the humanoid nightmare monsters: humanlike as well, but more firmly imaginary. Vampires, zombies.

LD: Zombies?

DB: Largely imaginary, then. Werewolves and the like. Third is the animals. Also much like regular animals, but exaggerated in form. Lions with too-large jaws.

LD: Dinosaurs?

DB: Yes. Fourth is the alien types. These are generally still humanoid, but clear echoes of alien forms about which we are familiar. Bulbous heads and eyes, or reminiscent of a movie alien.

LD: And the fifth?

DB: Other. Whatever doesn’t fit in the first four categories. This is for the transitional alien forms; as you know they’ve been seen mutating from one design to another. There have also been reports of aggressive geometric forms, not unlike the 8-Bit alien, which was a little bit of the fourth type and the fifth.

LD: I see. What’s your hot take on all of this? What does it mean?

DB: (laughs) I don’t know! But I will say, it seems as if whatever the nature of the intelligence behind all of this, it’s tapping into our collective nightmares. For some reason.

LD: Not the first time an alien has done that, for the record.
